Marking 25 years of the lifting of the military LGBT ban

The 12th of January 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the repeal of the ban on gay individuals serving openly in the armed forces – a milestone that reflects significant progress in military inclusivity and LGBT rights.

This landmark decision followed a long legal battle culminating in a case before the European Court of Human Rights. Before 2000, being gay in the British military was not only grounds for dismissal but also a criminal offence, potentially resulting in jail time. Many who served were stripped of their medals and livelihoods, solely because of their sexuality.

At Pinnacle Service Families, we stand proudly together with Fighting with Pride, who continue to build on this progress. Dedicated to supporting LGBT veterans, service members, and their families, offering support services and community engagement.

Their work ensures that those who served in silence are now recognised and supported, reinforcing the message that all who serve, regardless of their sexual orientation, deserve dignity and respect.

As we reflect on this 25-year journey, we celebrate those who fought for this change, the efforts of organisations such as Fighting with Pride remind us that while significant strides have been made, the fight for full equality and support for all LGBT service members continues.
